We are part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain and therefore in communion with the Oecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Although part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese our members include people from many nationalities including Greek, Cypriot, Russian, Romanian, Georgian, Bulgarian, Indian, Malaysian as well as British. To cater for our multi-national membership our services are therefore mainly held in English and we have received a number of new people into the Orthodox Church over the years.
We held Services in various places around the Preston and Wigan area from November 1989. From January 2000 - July 2007 we rented the Galloway Hall in Preston on Sunday mornings to serve the Holy Liturgy. This provided a more permanent base and support grew from people of different nationalities.
After what seemed like an endless search for a property to use as our own church we finally found and successfully purchased the former Leyland Lane Methodist Church on Leyland Lane in Leyland, which we moved into on July 23rd 2007.
It took a few hard working people about six months to convert the basics of the church building. As the previous internal layout was unsuitable for Orthodox use, this involved a complete stripping out, laying a new flat floor, building an apse and altar area and general repairs to walls, etc. Gradual finer developments took place over the following six months whilst we were using the church and wall and iconostasis paintings are still continuing. Photos can be seen in the website gallery section.
Fortunately the parish hall did not require any major alterations and we have only renovated the floor and done general decorative work and maintenance. We were able to use it for services during the church refurbishment and have made good social use of it ever since. Gradual maintenance and improvement of the whole premises has continued since.
We have seen a gradual growth in our membership since moving into our own premises as people get to know about us. Our aim is to be welcoming to everyone, whether they are already Orthodox or just interested in Orthodoxy. From our very early beginnings we have always been a very multi-ethnic group of believers and this must help with our outward looking and inclusive ethos. So come along and say hello!
After the Liturgy, tea and coffee is provided so if you are new please do join us for a drink and make yourself known to us. You will always find a warm welcome at Holy Apostles.
On the second and fourth Sunday of each month we operate a Sunday School after the Liturgy where children aged 5+ can attend and learn more about The Faith. If you wish to have your child attend please speak to Presbytera Rebecca after the Liturgy or contact her on 07890 208539.
If you are thinking of becoming Orthodox Catechumen classes are held as required to instruct in the basics of Orthodox Christianity leading up to baptism or chrismation.
Please contact Fr Dionysios if you wish to discuss a baptism, wedding or other similar matters. He will be happy to talk to you about the requirements if you are already Orthodox or thinking about becoming Orthodox.
